Why I'm using GitBook
Why use a documentation platform?
I was thinking about creating and using a blog, but I already have so many accounts on content platforms and feel like I'm on a hamster wheel.
I wanted something to serve as the epicenter of sorts for everything that I do and I think the documentation structure works well for providing overviews on projects, as well as updates and more.
Other platforms I considered
A Carrd + blogstatic set up
This was the original blog platform I was considering, and if I do end up creating a blog for any of my projects, it would likely be with this set up.
A full-on wiki using MediaWiki or TiddlyWiki
Why GitBook?
What I love about GitBook
free tier includes custom domain
incredibly friendly editor
very visitor-friendly navigation
Some drawbacks
no way for people to subscribe for updates (so it's on me to share what I've added via other platforms)
navigation could get unwieldy if I treat a page as if it were a post (so my plan is to instead have some pages that are more like logs, with dates as headers you can navigate through)
limited customization (but tbh I don't mind it so much, and their pro plan does allow for more customization if I really want to change the font and other things)
